McAfee found dead in cell after Spanish court allows extradition

Anti-virus software pioneer John McAfee was found dead in his prison cell in Barcelona on Wednesday after Spain's High Court ruled he could be extradited to the United States where he faced tax evasion charges that carried a sentence of up to 30 years.

McAfee remains a person of interest in the 2011 murder of Gregory Faull in Ambergris Caye, Belize District, though he refused to speak to authorities here and fled to Guatemala before being extracted to the U.S. He was later found liable in a wrongful death suit and got involved in multiple legal issues over the years before his untimely passing.

In a hearing held via videolink earlier this month, McAfee also argued that the charges against him were politically motivated and said he would spend the rest of his life in prison if he was returned to the U.S.

McAfee was arrested in the Barcelona airport then jailed there in October. Spanish outlet El Mundo reported that the mogul had been held in the facility's module 1 wing.

The entrepreneur was arrested last October at Barcelona's global airport.
