Tornado sweeps through suburban Chicago, causing injuries and damage

Naperville city spokeswoman Linda LaCloche says at least five people, including a woman who was listed in critical condition, were hospitalized in Naperville, where 16 homes were left "uninhabitable" after the late Sunday storm. "Lots of utility poles and wires have fallen and the trees have been damaged", Lacroche said Monday morning. There were no reports of significant injuries in the community, but people were urged to avoid the area because of downed power lines and trees. She said several gas leaks were reported in Naperville and the crew made a door-to-door canvassing to shut down the line.

The storm destroyed the second floor of the Woodridge family in Bridget Casey. She sat in a lawn chair in the driveway before sunrise Monday.

"I just heard a loud crash and I'm thinking, 'Oh, what are my brothers up to?' I go look and I see the sky, and then I hear my brothers screaming from the room", he told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The paper said the tornado struck at about 11:11 p.m. on Sunday.

A CBS Chicago reporter tweeted that six people were injured in total and some residents were evacuated to nearby shelters. It's news, "he says".

A strong line of storms ripped through the Chicago suburbs Sunday, June 20, 2021, including a tornado.

"The severe threat has diminished/ended for most of the Chicago metro area". The threat for wind damage remained for a few hours as the line of storms moved over northern IL and into northwestern IN, forecasters said.
