The Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would make Juneteenth, or June 19th, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

It marks the day that US Army General Gordon Grainger formally told enslaved African-Americans in Galveston, Texas, that the American Civil War was over and they had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, enacted two-and-a-half years earlier by President Abraham Lincoln. The day, traditionally marked in southern states only, marks when news of the end of slavery reached the slaves in the southwestern states. Juneteenth is a paid holiday for state employees in Texas, New York, Virginia and Washington.

The resolution designates June 19 as "Juneteenth independence day", in recognition of the same date in 1865.
