He added that the queen had asked about Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The auto pulled up - a few minutes ahead of schedule - and out stepped President Biden, wearing dark glasses, holding his wife's hand as they walked up the dais steps to meet the Queen. Biden's first time meeting the queen came in November 1982, when as a USA senator he travelled to the United Kingdom for a meeting of the British-American Parliamentary Group, the White House said Sunday.

The monarch, attired in a bright pink floral outfit, had warmly greeted Biden and his wife Jill in the Quadrangle of the castle, home to the royal family for almost 1,000 years, where they were treated to a taste of British pomp.

He replied: "Yes, we did".

The Bidens became the fourth president and first lady the queen has received at Windsor, following the Trumps in 2018, the Obamas in 2016, President George W. Bush and his wife in 2008 and the Reagans in 1982. She has since met almost every American president (Lyndon Johnson was the exception) who served during her 69 years on the throne.

After their moment outside in the blistering sun, the trio headed into the castle's Grand Corridor for an official photograph before heading into private quarters for tea.

Making one of her few public appearances since the death of her beloved husband Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II proved she hasn't lost her humor while rubbing shoulders with world leaders at a G-7 reception on Friday. "Don't you bow down to her", Biden was told, according to a memoir.

This year's celebration was again noticeably smaller than usual and has been dubbed a "mini" Trooping the Colour.

Mr Trump and the Queen had afternoon tea together in the castle's Oak Room, with the meeting lasting longer than expected. It is believed the visit overran by 10 minutes.

President Biden described Queen Elizabeth as an "extremely gracious" woman who reminds him of his mother after meeting her at Windsor Castle.
