European Union launches legal action against AstraZeneca over Covid vaccine delays

De Keersmaecker said the deal between the European Union and AstraZeneca had "not been respected" and accused the pharmaceuticals company of failing to "come up with a reliable strategy to ensure the timely delivery of doses".

Health authorities are reallocating around 75% of Democratic Republic of Congo's 1.7 million AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine doses to other African countries to make sure they're used before they expire, a Unicef representative said on Monday.

So far, almost 54% of adults in the US have received at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine, according to data published Monday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Because of the scope of the current situation in India and the state of our own production here at home, this was the most effective and rapid step we could take at this stage to provide support at scale", the official said.

In the first three months of 2021, AstraZeneca was able to deliver only about a quarter of the expected 120m doses explaining the shortfall with production problems at a plant in Belgium, leading to angry accusations from Brussels.

He added: "But now they are out with a response and across the board, the President, Vice President, Secretary of State, NSA etc, they have said they will help us with some of the critical items".

The EU has so far vaccinated over 24% of its population. The Hindu has reached out to the Indian Embassy for comment on why ready-to-use vaccines were not on the list of requests for US assistance.

India has become the latest epicenter of the pandemic, threatening to overwhelm its healthcare system.

Australia is set to consider a proposal on Tuesday to suspend flights from India to prevent more virulent coronavirus variants entering the country following a surge in positive Covid-19 cases in the world's second-most populous nation.

Global health experts are calling on the US government to send its stockpile of AstraZeneca-University of Oxford coronavirus vaccines to India immediately as health officials say they don't anticipate using any of the doses.

"Every vaccine dose counts", Stella Kyriakides, the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, said in a tweet confirming the action.

At the beginning of the call, the official said that the administration remembers India's generosity when it helped the United States in the early days of the pandemic by offering medical assistance.

The White House is increasingly confident in the supply of the three vaccines being administered in the US, particularly following the restart of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson shot over the weekend.

The aid package includes oxygen and related supplies, with the US looking at sending oxygen generation systems.

Psaki said the FDA will conduct a quality review of doses before they can leave the country and that the US' plan to distribute the vaccine is still being developed. AstraZeneca is still looking to identify a new USA production facility for its future doses.

The U.S. was "committed" to getting India the assistance it needs and "will continue to communicate at the highest level", she said.

Meera Shankar, also a former Indian envoy to Washington, said while the response from the USA can be seen as a delay, India also lacked preparedness and "declared victory over Covid when the numbers were still relatively higher".
