Ontario reports almost 4,500 new COVID-19 infections

Since the pandemic began, the province has logged 424,911 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 374,213 recoveries and 7,757 deaths - 22 of which were reported in the previous day. That number is up more than 450 cases from one week ago.

The measures came as Ontario reported 4,447 new cases of COVID-19 amid worries the province's intensive care units are struggling to keep up with a growing number of extremely sick patients.

It hasn't been determined whether that original case was caught in the territory or outside, and Patterson said he expects to know later this week whether it is a variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Of the latest cases, 1,299 are in Toronto, 926 are in Peel, and 577 are in York Region.

Right now, there are 42,941 active cases of the novel coronavirus in Ontario.

The province announced the change on Sunday after federal health minister Patty Hajdu said in a new conference that it was within the provinces' jurisdiction to change the age limits for the vaccine.
