At the end of last month, four people, including a child, were shot dead in an office building in southern California.

President Joe Biden, faced with yet another mass shooting on his watch, said Friday that the news of at least eight Americans killed in Indianapolis on Thursday night has "become too normal".

Police spokeswoman Genae Cook told reporters officers found an "active shooter incident" at a Fedex facility near the city's worldwide airport, and believe the gunman died by suicide.

Biden, who has faced pressure to call more forcefully for gun control measures, said in his Friday statement that it's up to Congress act next, including on some gun control legislation that has already been passed by the House.

Police were called to reports of gunfire Thursday just after 11 p.m., and officers "came in contact with (an) active shooter incident", Cook said.

Another two people were treated and released at the scene.

In a statement to NPR, FedEx said it was "deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of our team members following the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility in Indianapolis".

"Well, once we positively identify who he is, we will be able to research further", spokeswoman Genae Cook said.

Police Chief Randal Taylor noted that a "significant" number of employees at the facility are members of the Sikh community, and the Sikh Coalition later confirmed that members of the community were among the wounded and killed.

She said people at the scene were still being interviewed by detectives and may not have had the chance to contact their families. FedEx said in a statement early Friday that it was cooperating with authorities and working to get more information.

The shooter was identified as 19-year-old Brandon Scott Hole of IN, two law enforcement officials briefed on the matter told The Associated Press.

Multiple other people were injured and were taken to local hospitals.

The families' agonizing waiting was exacerbated by the fact that most employees aren't allowed to carry cellphones inside the FedEx building, making contact with them hard.

Witnesses heard several gunshots at a FedEx facility and one said he had seen a man firing an automatic weapon.

According to one count, the USA has had 45 mass shootings - defined as an incident that results in four or more casualties (dead or wounded) over the past month. Let us look out for one another, as we have done all throughout this past challenging year, and as we send our most heartfelt sympathies to all who have been affected by this awful act of violence.

"As we pray for the families of all affected, we must work urgently to enact commonsense gun violence prevention laws to save lives & prevent this suffering", the Democratic leader said in a tweet. "I immediately ducked down and got scared", he said.

A man told WTTV that his niece was sitting in the driver's seat of her auto when the gunfire erupted, and she was wounded.

"She got shot on her left arm", said Parminder Singh.
