One person dies following shooting at high school in Tennessee

Knoxville Police Department officers responded to reports of a male subject who was possibly armed at Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville at around 3.15pm (8.15pm Irish time) today.

During a press conference Monday, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) said the suspect was a student at Austin-East Magnet High School.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said he wanted to "acknowledge a very hard and tragic situation we have happening across at Knoxville Austin-East Magnet High School".

"And he said he'd rather that he be hurt than anybody else, and is in very good spirits and looking forward to the successful surgery".

"We are a Title I magnet high school with a performing arts focus that offers resources including visual arts, CTE and rigorous academic courses", Austin-East says on its website.

One male died at the scene and another was detained by officers.

The injured male police officer is conscious and his injuries are not life-threatening.

As the officer approached the subject there was an exchange of gunfire, according to police.

They ordered him out, but he wouldn't comply, and that's when he reportedly opened fire, Rausch said.

Asked about the overwhelming police response to a call that came in just before afternoon dismissal, Knoxville Police Chief Eve Thomas said, "We have a student, a school incident".

The officer was shot at least once and taken to the hospital, police said.

Bob Thomas, the superintendent of Knox County Schools, tweeted later Monday that a shooting had occurred but the building had been secured.

A reunification site is set up at the baseball field behind the school, police said in another tweet.

"We are gathering information about this tragic situation and will provide additional information as soon as possible", he wrote.

Eight people were slain at Atlanta-area spas, 10 people at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, and four people, including a 9-year-old boy at a real estate office in Orange, California.

When asked earlier this year whether recent mass shootings gave him any concerns about timing, Lee said the increased penalties mean that "we in fact will be strengthening laws that would help prevent gun crimes in the future".
