California Eyes June 15 for Statewide Reopening, Including Music Venues

After more than a year of shutdowns and stay-at-home orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic, officials announced Tuesday that California will officially fully reopen for business beginning June 15th, however the state's mask mandate will remain in place.

As of Monday, the state has administered 19,894,885 total vaccines.

"With more than 20 million vaccines administered across the state, it is time to turn the page on our tier system and begin looking to fully reopen California's economy", Newsom said. That mark will loosen the daily case rate in the second least-restrictive orange tier.

However, the state's face mask mandate will remain in place indefinitely, along with so-called "social distancing" and the pressure to vaccinate. Ghaly also addressed the multi-day Coachella music festival that draws thousands to the Southern California desert annually, noting that it may not be able to reopen at the same size and scope, but state officials are working with organizers and event planners to ensure the safety of all participants. According to a statement made Tuesday morning, April 6, by Dr. Wilma Wooten, San Diego's public health officer, the region's latest weekly score came in at 5.8 in Tuesday's report from the California Department of Public Health, though the full statewide report had not yet been released. "We are seeing the bright light at the end of the tunnel, and on June 15, all things being equal - continue that good work - we'll have moved beyond the blueprint and we'll be opening up this economy and business as usual". That number is expected to increase, with Newsom anticipating that more than 30 million doses will have been administered by the end of the month. People aged 50 and older became eligible for the vaccine on April 1, and will be joined by those 16 and up starting on April 15.

"The Blueprint as it's devised now will no longer be in effect as of June 15", Ghaly said, referring to the state's Blueprint for a Safer Economy website and color-tiering system.

2 victims, suspect 'down' in Maryland shooting
Police in Maryland responded to an active shooter on Tuesday and said there are at least two victims. The victims were flown by helicopter to Baltimore and are in critical condition, Lando said.

"With all of that, we are at the stage where we're ready to consider the next aspect of our pandemic response, " Ghaly said.

California reported the lowest positivity rate in the country at 1.7%, far from its peak of 17.1% in early January when the state was reeling from a post-holiday surge.

"This is really a race, these vaccines, against the variants, against the mutations, " Newsom said.

"Part of the idea is that we can ramp up safely and it will also provide an incentive as people are allowed to do more activities because they're vaccinated", said the state's economic adviser, Dee Dee Myers.

"There will be no barrier to having our kids back for in-person instruction, " Newsom added.
