Jordan Accuses Prince Hamzah of Undermining Country’s Security

The alleged plot "included at least one other Jordanian royal as well as tribal leaders and members of the country's security establishment", the United States daily added.

"The Iraqi government affirms that it stands with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, in any steps taken to preserve the security and stability of the country and take care of the interests of the brotherly people of Jordan, in a way that boosts their presence, by relying on measures that aim to extend the respect of the state", the foreign ministry said in a statement.

In light of the developments over the past two days, I put myself at the disposal of His Majesty the King, and I reaffirm that I will always remain committed to the covenant of the ancestors, loyal to their legacy, following in their footsteps, devoted to their path and mission, and to His Majesty the King; and committed to the Constitution of the dear Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Hassan, the uncle, also had been crown prince but was removed shortly before Hussein's death.

This was an apparent reference to Saturday's events when Jordan's army chief visited Hamzah and - according to the prince's description - imposed restrictions on his movement and ability to communicate with the outside world. Four other princes joined Hassan in the mediation effort, including Hamzah's brother, Hashem.

The apparent resolution of the unprecedented public feud capped a weekend of palace drama during which the king had placed Hamzah under house arrest for allegedly plotting with foreign supporters to destabilize Jordan, a key Western ally.

While Hamzah denies any wrongdoing, he denounced the ruling government in the video, saying, "I am not the person responsible for the breakdown in governance, for the corruption, and for the incompetence that has been prevalent in our governing structure for the last 15 to 20 years, and has been getting worse by the year".

"I'm not responsible for the lack of faith that people have in their institutions".

"We are confident the global community will work hard to ensure that the deficiencies in the [2015 nuclear accord] are eventually addressed and they will also address the regional instability that is caused by Iran's activities", he said.

Hamzah leaked the videos through his lawyer, who then gave them to the BBC. "When an army chief of staff says that, this is something that I think is unacceptable".

Please join me in praying for Officer Evans' family and all of our @CapitolPolice officers amid this tragedy", Miller said . Capitol Police for 18 years. "Grateful to all the USCP and first responders who are on the scene".

Jordan's military told Hamzah to stop activities targeting the country's "stability and security".

The country's armed forces denied that the prince had been arrested, noting that he was told to cease actions that undermine the nation's security. He claimed the prince recorded the conversations, passed them to foreign sources and issued his video message "in an attempt to distort facts and to gain sympathy domestically and internationally".

"I'm now waiting to see what they will do".

The state news agency said on Saturday that Bassem Awadallah, a USA -educated long-time confidant of the king who later became minister of finance and also advisor to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and royal family member Sharif Hassan Ben Zaid had been detained, along with others.

Safadi declined to identify the alleged foreign parties or say what the charges were, but said that authorities acted because the alleged conspirators were "talking about timing". The investigation was ongoing, he said.

The royal family's fracas has upended the stability that Jordan has long touted as an achievement in a hard part of the world.

Washington, major Gulf powers, Egypt and the Arab League have all been quick to pledge their support for Abdullah and his steps to ensure stability, and a similar message came from Russian Federation on Monday.

While very little information has been revealed about Sharif Hassan Bin Zaid, including his ties with Saudi Arabia, alleging financial investments he has in the neighboring kingdom, the internet was filled with accounts on the former royal aid now under arrest; Bassem Awadallah.
