Coronavirus: India records 81,466 new cases

Subsequently, from April 1, 2021, all persons aged 45 years and above are eligible for Covid vaccination.

The countrywide vaccination drive was rolled out on January 16.

The Central government has made a decision to close the registration of healthcare and frontline workers for Covid-19 vaccination after reports of fake registration under these categories came to the fore.

The ministry said the numbers included 89,03,809 healthcare workers (HCWs) and 95,15,410 frontline workers, who have taken the first dose.

In January, Buckingham Palace announced both Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip have received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. "However, universal vaccination of already registered HCWs and FLWs should be ensured at the earliest", he added.

He stated that there has been 24 per cent increase in healthcare workers database in the past few days. "This issue was discussed with state representatives and domain knowledge experts", he added.

Emergency situation at US Capitol, reports of shots fired, officers injured
Capitol Police said someone "rammed a vehicle into two USCP officers" and a suspect was taken into custody, but had since died. Video posted online showed a dark colored sedan crashed against a vehicle barrier and a police K9 inspecting the vehicle.

Starting March 1, the second phase was launched to inoculate those who are above 60 years of age or are above 45 years with co-morbidities.

This includes 6,86,78,838 first doses and 1,04,26,325 second doses.

According to the health ministry, advance appointments for vaccination can be booked through http://cowin.gov.in, or one can visit their nearest vaccination centre after 3 pm and get on-site registration done.

This comes at a time when India is witnessing a second surge in coronavirus infections with over 72,000 new COVID-19 cases and 459 related deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

The death toll rose to 1,64,623 with 513 fresh fatalities.

With rising cases and several states even lifting mask mandates and with more infectious variants also spreading, health authorities are hoping that the contracts it struck with the now approved vaccine makers will be enough for its entire population.
