US Capitol goes into lockdown after auto rams barricade, killing police officer

"Two U.S. Capitol police officers were transported to two different hospitals".

Robert Contee, chief of the DC police department, told a news conference later that there was no longer an ongoing threat and the attack was not believed to be related to terrorism.

The suspect had been taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The crash and shooting happened at a security checkpoint near the Capitol as Congress was on recess. It comes as the Washington region remains on edge almost three months after a mob of armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden's presidential win.

"I just ask that the public continue to keep U.S. Capitol Police and their families in your prayers", Pittman said.

One US Capitol Police officer has died and another is injured after a suspect rammed a vehicle into a police barricade outside the Capitol building Friday afternoon, the department's acting chief Yogananda Pittman told reporters during a press briefing roughly two hours after initial reports of the attack first surfaced. The officer's identity was not released. "This has been an extremely hard time for U.S. Capitol Police after the events of January 6 and now the events that have occurred here today". "Even though the attacker left the vehicle with a knife in his hand and had run towards the police officers", the Capitol Police was quoted as saying.

The suspect, who was later pronounced dead, crashed into the two officers on Constitution Avenue outside the Capitol just after 1:00 p.m. A second officer was also hurt in the incident and taken to the hospital. The suspect died at a hospital.

US Dollar Softens as Biden Proposes $2-Trillion Spending Package
Still, Biden said he's open to working with Republicans who have different ideas about how to improve the nation's infrastructure. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell dismissed the package as nothing more than a "Trojan horse" for tax hikes.

The security checkpoint is typically used by senators and staff on weekdays, but lawmakers are away for recess. For more than two months, 10-foot fencing surrounding the entire Capitol complex, preventing unauthorized individuals from gaining access.

In the video clips, a heavy police presence is seen on the premises of the Capitol, which is sealed off with yellow tape. The law enforcement officials told the AP that the driver then got out of the auto with what appeared to be a knife.

Law enforcement officials identified the slain suspect as 25-year-old Noah Green.

The locality around the US Capitol and congressional office buildings were immediately put on a lockdown as dozens of marked and unmarked police cars raced toward America's legislative seat. But the hallways were mostly empty despite the chaos outside.

The complex was locked down in the aftermath of the January 6 riot, and a National Guard contingent of around 2,300 troops was still stationed in the area as of Friday. Video showed National Guard troops mobilising near the area of the crash. They further added that the suspect did not appear to wrestle with the police officers.

The Capitol was on lockdown amid reports of shots having been fired in the incident.
