"Please keep Officer Evans and his family in your thoughts and prayers", Ms Pittman said in a statement. They also confirmed this does not appear to be terrorism, but they are still investigating.

Update: According to Fox News' Chad Pergram, the suspect got out of his auto armed with a knife and was shot by officers.

All three people involved, the two officers and the driver, were taken to the hospital.

Whether the extra fencing around the Capitol was needed after the deadly January 6 insurrection has been a point of controversy in Washington, D.C. And despite Greene's sign, the fencing is under the purview of U.S. Capitol Police, not Pelosi, and was erected by law enforcement and the military. "On behalf of the entire House, we are profoundly grateful", Pelosi added.

President Joe Biden had just departed the White House for Camp David when the incident occurred.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to Officer Evans' family, and everyone grieving his loss". "This has been an extremely hard time for U.S. after Jan 6 riots", the Capitol Police said.

In a tweet Friday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said, "Praying for the United States Capitol Police officers who were attacked at the Capitol".

The driver of the vehicle was first reported to be in critical condition, but since died.

US Capitol on lockdown over security threat: Report

The crash and shooting happened at a security checkpoint near the Capitol typically used by senators and staff on weekdays, though most are away from the building during the current recess.

The Washington region remains on edge almost three months after a mob of armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden's presidential win.

Capitol Police said someone "rammed a vehicle into two USCP officers" and a suspect was taken into custody, but had since died. Two other Capitol police officers who responded that day took their own lives after the fact.

The U.S. Capitol remained on lockdown Friday afternoon after a vehicle rammed a barricade outside the Senate, though the building was largely empty due to a two-week recess.

Update: Fox News's Jacqui Heinrich reports that one of the officers has died.

"Due to an exterior security threat, no entry or exit is permitted at this time in any building in the Capitol complex", a voice announcement throughout the complex sounded. The lockdown has since been lifted. A street sign visible on the right side of the picture indicates she was standing on Independence Avenue, which is on the south side of the Capitol building (opposite of where the April 2 incident occurred).

A fence was erected around the Capitol Campus following the attack at the Capitol on January 6.

Video posted online showed a dark colored sedan crashed against a vehicle barrier and a police K9 inspecting the vehicle.
