USA plant ruins 15 mn J&J coronavirus vaccine doses

Workers at Emergent BioSolutions' Baltimore plant accidentally conflated the Janssen vaccines' ingredients several weeks ago, Johnson & Johnson confirmed Wednesday.

When contacted by AFP, the pharmaceutical giant said it had identified a batch of doses at a plant in Baltimore run by Emergent BioSolutions "that did not meet quality standards" but did not confirm the specific number affected.

Moving forward, J&J is moving to implement tighter controls at its manufacturing partner, the company's statement said. Emergent declined to comment.

The vaccine rollout across the country has continued to ramp up, and the Times report says the delay isn't going to affect the Biden administration's timeline to provide enough vaccines for all American adults. The site is not yet authorized by the FDA to make the drug substance used in the vaccine.

J&J had pledged to provide 20 million doses of its vaccine to the USA government by the end of March, and 80 million more doses by the end of May.

According to reports on Saturday, witnesses said the man appeared to attack anyone who simply crossed his path. He said people brought tea towels and other supplies, including a first aid kit, to the library.

As of Wednesday, J&J had provided about 6.8 million doses to the USA vaccine effort, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's online vaccine tracker.

"Here in MA, that'll be definitely north of 100,000 doses of J&J vaccine, and I can't tell you how important that is", Baker said.

Johnson & Johnson is now expanding its presence in the Emergent BioSolutions facility, according to the statement. He relied on that in moving up his timeline on when the USA would have enough vaccine to cover all adults.

"In coordination with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, these steps will enable us to safely deliver an additional 24 million single-shot vaccine doses through April", company officials said. J&J didn't immediately offer an explanation as to why CDC data show just 6.8 million doses having been delivered to states. "This approach includes having dedicated specialists on the ground at the companies that are part of our global manufacturing network to support safety and quality".
