"We believe these women. and we believe the 55 members of the New York State legislature including the State Senate majority leader, who have concluded that Governor Cuomo can no longer effectively lead in the face of so many challenges", they wrote.

"We commend the fearless actions of the individuals who have come forward with serious allegations of abuse and misconduct", they said.

The nation's top congressional Democrat and his district counterpart joined a growing caucus of NY lawmakers demanding the resignation of Andrew Cuomo, who faces several allegations of sexual harassment, an investigation from his state attorney general, and intense scrutiny over his state's failure to accurately report Covid-19 deaths in nursing homes.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo walks on the grounds of the Governor's Mansion following allegations that he had sexually harassed young women, in Albany, New York, U.S., March 12, 2021. "I didn't do what has been alleged", the 63-year-old said on a call to reporters.

It comes after 59 Democrats in the state legislature on Thursday signed a statement demanding Cuomo step down and as New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has also called on him to quit.

Psaki reiterated that President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris support the state attorney general's investigation into the harassment allegations.

New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie announced Thursday he was authorizing a judiciary committee to begin an impeachment investigation into Cuomo. Ya see? Everyone, including top Dems like Chuck Schumer, R abandoning sexless Cuomo & asking him to resign.

The state-level call was preceded by the sixth allegation recently made against the governor, in which an unnamed aid alleged that Cuomo had invited her to the New York State Executive Mansion and groped her past year.

The escalating political crisis has spawned an impeachment inquiry in an overwhelmingly Democratic state, and threatens to cast a cloud over President Joe Biden's early days in office.

Cuomo is under fire for the misconduct accusations and a scandal on his failure to report nursing home deaths connected with COVID-19. New stories today in The New York Times and New York magazine detailed more accusations of inappropriate behavior and what some have described as a toxic and abusive work environment in Cuomo's office.

Shortly after the representatives issued their statements on Friday, State Senator Mike Gianaris revealed that the entire Democratic state senate delegation had also now agreed that Cuomo should resign.

Friday morning Congressman Brian Higgins also issued a statement calling on the governor to resign.

Mr Cuomo has said he will not resign and has asked the public to await the results of that probe before making a judgment.

"Politicians who don't know a single fact, but yet form a conclusion and then opinion are, in my opinion, reckless and risky", Cuomo said during the call.

Cuomo has repeatedly said he will not step down. None of the desertions hurt more than those of New York's two US senators, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen.

"I now understand that I acted in a way that made people feel uncomfortable", Cuomo said. And another aide claimed the governor once kissed her without consent, and said governor's aides publicly smeared her after she accused him of sexual harassment. On Friday, a bloc of five moderate Democrats from Long Island called for Cuomo to step aside, at least until the attorney general's investigation is complete.

"As legislators and as New Yorkers we all must decide what is best for the future of New York State", read the letter, which was posted on Twitter by one of its signatories, Democratic Assemblywoman Amanda Septimo of the South Bronx.
