MS to lift state-issued mask mandates

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott's repeal of most Covid-19 restrictions - saying it was "time to open Texas 100%" - reverberated across the state and to the White House on Wednesday, a day after one of the country's most dramatic rollbacks of rules meant to slow the spread of the virus.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky recently said, "Please hear me clearly: At this level of cases with variants spreading, we stand to completely lose the hard-earned ground we have gained".

"The last thing we need is the Neanderthal thinking that, in the meantime, everything is fine, take off our mask, forget it", he added.

"Relaxing common-sense, non-intrusive safety protocols like wearing masks is a mistake", wrote EVP of communications and state affairs Jason Brewer. Employees and vendors will continue donning masks until vaccines are more widely available, the company said in a statement.

White House Senior COVID-19 Advisor Andy Slavitt said it is "critically important" to continue wearing masks over the next few months, saying President Joe Biden has emphasized it so much because it could save tens of thousands of lives. It removes all restrictions on businesses in counties without a high number of hospitalisations.

"As of yesterday, we had lost 511,874 Americans". "We'll not have everybody vaccinated until sometime in the summer". Masks will still be required where social distancing is not possible.

Reeves has drawn heavy criticism from multiple sides of the political spectrum over his handling of COVID-19 in MS, with some decrying any COVID-related executive order as "tyrannical" and others criticizing his patchwork approach to mask mandates.

Several chains have said they plan to keep their guidelines in accordance with recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The mask mandate was imposed across Texas by Abbott in July when coronavirus outbreak was at its peak. COVID-19 hospitalizations and new infections have dropped significantly in the past month. "Everything. I also ended the statewide mask mandate", Abbott said in a tweet following the conference.

"This must end. It is now time to open Texas 100 percent", he said to cheers from his audience.

State education officials on Wednesday gave local school boards the ability to set their own rules. But that authority has never been affirmed by the courts, according to the American Bar Association. At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, most introduced restrictions on businesses and travel.

The COVID-19 response team also lauded Johnson & Johnson's decision to work with competitor Merck to increase production of the recently-approved one-shot COVID-19 vaccine.

Courts are now considering the constitutionality of evictions amid the pandemic, which had been ordered halted by the CDC, a federal agency.

Some cities have also acted.

"It's just that now state mandates are no longer needed", added Abbott.
