Gregg Popovich Rips Texas Governor Greg Abbott

Greg Abbott announced Tuesday that they will lift mask mandates and allow businesses to open at full capacity in their respective states.

Abbott's executive order comes as many USA states and major cities see a sharp decline in coronavirus infections and hospitalisations begin to ease the unprecedented lockdowns put in place a year ago. Mr Abbott has faced criticism from his party over the measure, which was imposed last July. In Hays County, only 12,750 residents have been fully vaccinated out of an estimated 183,380 people 16 years or older, while 25,974 have received at least one dose as of Tuesday, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

"Too many Texans have been sidelined from employment opportunities. Too many small business owners have struggled to pay their bills", Abbott stated.

The governor said he was able to lift the restrictions because Texas, the third most-populous USA state, had administered almost 5.7 million vaccine shots to its 29 million residents. "Personal vigilance to follow the safe standards is still needed to contain COVID", Abbott said.

"Today I'm issuing a new executive order that rescinds most of the earlier executive orders", Abbott said at a press conference.

Germany confirms it will receive 16 million AZ doses in second quarter
Ghana became the first African country on Wednesday, February 24 to take the delivery of 600,000 doses of the vaccines. The shortfall could hamper the EU's plans to meet its goal of vaccinating 70% of adults by late summer .

What about other U.S. states? The United States has recorded 28,681,793 infections and 513,721 coronavirus-related deaths since the pandemic began.

"Texas will experience more cases, more hospitalizations and more deaths", state Rep. Richard Peña Raymond, a Democrat from Laredo, told Abbott in a letter Monday.

Shortly after Mr Abbott's announcement, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said he would do the same in an even shorter time frame.

As of Wednesday businesses in MS will be able to resume full operations without any state interference and residents will no longer be subject to county mask mandates. President Donald Trump declared the coronavirus pandemic a national emergency on March 13, 2020. "When COVID first ravaged our communities there were no medicines to treat it, but now we have antibody therapeutic drugs who treat COVID and keep people out of hospitals".

"Texas now has the tools to protect Texans from the virus", he said.
