Senator jets off to Mexico as Texas slammed by winter storm

Democrats in Texas were baffled by reports of Cruz's trip, which came after multiple people had died in the state, millions were told to boil tap water before drinking it, Texas' governor ordered residents to shut off water to their homes if they could, and some Texans were resorting to risky measures to keep themselves and their families warm.

"The Texas Democratic Party calls on Ted Cruz to resign or be expelled from office...

Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon", he said.

At least 24 people in the state have died this week.

Photos that rapidly circulated on social media overnight showed a man who could be the senator at an airport and on an airplane.

Cruz also issued a statement on Thursday confirming earlier speculation about his travel.

The big picture: While Cruz has no direct control over the power situation in Texas as a federal lawmaker, outraged critics argued the senator should be stateside trying to find solutions for his constituents.

"Ted Cruz jetting off to Mexico while Texans remain dying in the cold isn't surprising but it is deeply disturbing and disappointing", he said.

Cruz did not immediately confirm or respond to the reports of his jaunt.

Cruz and other Texas Republicans were already under fierce attack for failing to prepare for the catastrophic winter storm and Arctic blast that has virtually brought the nation's second-most-populous state to its knees.

Images of Cruz and his wife, Heidi, boarding a flight at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston first appeared on Twitter late Wednesday night.

Power outages continue across Texas on Tuesday, after a snow storm left millions without heat in freezing temperatures.

Roughly 2.7 million households were without power in Texas as of Wednesday morning.

Cruz has been demonized by the left even before he ran for president in 2016. "Now, he is proving to be an enemy to our state by abandoning us in our greatest time of need", Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa said Thursday.

Gene Wu, a Democrat who serves in the Texas House of Representatives, said Cruz's trip was "on-brand". Power is slowly being restored to homes.

Multiple Twitter users shared photos of the Republican senator and armchair seditionist - or someone who looks just like him - purportedly on a flight to the popular resort spot of Cancun, Mexico.

"If Sen. Cruz had resigned back in January after helping gin up a violent insurrection that killed several people, he could've taken his vacation in peace", she said.
