Pelosi Announces '9/11-Type Commission' To Investigate Capitol Insurrection

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Congress must create an independent September 11-type commission to investigate the January 6 storming of the Capitol now that former President Donald Trump's impeachment trial has ended.

The goal of this new unit will be to investigate the reaction of the Capitol Police, who were overwhelmed by the mob in the attack, as well as the response, "Preparation and Feedback" From other law enforcement agencies at the federal, state and local levels "Interference in the peaceful transfer of power". Pelosi has also tasked retired Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré with a review of Capitol security, and he has already recommended an increase in the allowance for individual lawmakers to spend on security.

Legislators from both parties have since increasingly called for Congress to set up an independent commission, like that created after the 9/11 attacks. Republicans on the House Administration Committee have introduced legislation to establish a commission of five Republicans and five Democrats to investigate what they called a "domestic terrorist attack".

The commission - chaired by five Republicans and five Democrats and convened by Congress as part of a legislation signed by former president George W Bush - interviewed over 1,200 people in 10 countries and concluded that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Central Intelligence Agency failed to adequately assess the terrorist threats, among other things.

Cassidy, who has already been censured by the Louisiana Republican Party for his vote, said that the more people see and hear the evidence, the "more folks will move to where I was".

Democratic Senator Chris Coons, who like all Senate Democrats voted to impeach Trump, said a special commission with similar scope was needed to look at the Capitol insurrection. "We need a 9/11 commission to find out what happened and make sure it never happens again".

On Saturday, seven GOP senators joined all 50 Democrats in the Senate in voting to convict Trump. "It will look different", she said at the time.

Forty-three percent said Trump is not responsible for inciting violence while six percent said they believe he is responsible but should not face criminal charges.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing in all of these cases. "And that we lay bare the record of just how responsible and how abjectly violating of his constitutional oath President Trump really was".

"We must get to the truth of how this happened", she said.

And they said Mrs. Pelosi's office is stonewalling attempts to pry loose documents that would shed light on the decisions made.
