Home World Spain 'open' to using Russia's Covid vaccine

The COVID-19 vaccine developed in Russia - Sputnik V - has an efficacy of 92% against COVID-19 according to results of the late stage clinical trial published on Tuesday. Professionals are also needed, Mr Logunov said, adding Kazakhstan has them.

The results suggest Sputnik V is among the top performers alongside the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna jabs, which also reported more than 90 per cent efficacy.

The results were based on data from 19,866 volunteers, of whom a quarter received a placebo, the researchers, led by the Gamaleya Institute's Denis Logunov, said in The Lancet.

From the first weeks of the pandemic, Putin ordered the country's scientific, political and military apparatus to work in overdrive to develop the world's first Covid vaccine - even if that meant taking shortcuts.

More than a million people in Russian Federation have received Sputnik V, which is marketed overseas by the RDIF and has been approved for emergency use in Algeria, Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico and Serbia.

The data published by Lancet was based on a study which was collected from almost 20,000 participants, three-quarters of whom received the two-dose regimen of the adenovirus-based vaccine, Gam-COVID-Vac, and one quarter received a placebo.

Assistant Health Secretary Hugo Lpez-Gatell, the government's pandemic spokesman, said the health ministry signed a contract Monday for 400,000 doses of Sputnik V that will arrive this month.

The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF, Russia's sovereign wealth fund) announces the registration of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine against coronavirus by the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk of Mexico (COFEPRIS).

"Every vaccine is welcome in the European Union", Mrs Merkel said in an interview on Tuesday night.

UK Virus Variant Develops Concerning New Mutation in Some Cases
He may have been referring to the 1918 flu virus that eventually weakened as it spread around the world. Scientists at PHE said the B.1.1.7 variant appears to have developed the mutation independently.

To produce the vaccine a country has to have a set of equipment and consumables as well as to know the production technology.

Brazil, India, Kazakhstan and South Korea are now producing the jab, though not all them have made it available to the public yet.

The EU is facing anger over a sluggish start to its mass vaccination campaign and member state Hungary has already registered the Sputnik jab on its own. The trial was conducted across 25 hospitals and polyclinics in Moscow, Russia.

There are no strong allergies caused by Sputnik V.

A similar request from Pfizer and partner BioNTech for their vaccine is pending with the regulator.

Russian Federation has reported more than 3.8 million coronavirus cases, the fifth-most in the world, including almost 73,000 deaths.

Russian Federation faces a population sceptical of getting vaccinated, with recent surveys showing only 38 percent of respondents were prepared to be inoculated against Covid.

Peskov dismissed those concerns. They said it is another vaccine to "join the fight" against the coronavirus.
