UAE to offer citizenship to some foreigners to boost growth

The announcement made by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai who also serves as the autocratic nation's prime minister and vice president, said the offer could apply to artists, authors, doctors, engineers and scientists, as well as their families. "The new directives aim to attract talents that contribute to our development journey", he tweeted.

Foreigners eligible for acquiring UAE citizenship will be nominated by the UAE cabinet, in addition to local Emirati courts and executive councils, "under clear criteria for each category", Sheikh Mohammed explained.

"The law allows receivers of the UAE passport to keep their existing citizenship".

Oil-rich Gulf states have been forced to consider longer residency and limited citizenship for foreigners as they seek to attract investment and diversify from oil.

The major policy shift is aimed at attracting talent in a way that will boost growth in the UAE, home to the Middle East's finance and travel hubs Dubai and Abu Dhabi and millions of expatriate residents.

Many Nigerian politicians have also been reported to own properties in the UAE.

The law detailed the terms and conditions upon which the citizenship can be granted.

Scientists are required to be active researchers in universities or research centres or in the private sector, with practical experience of not less than 10 years in the same field.

As per the law, citizenships of said individuals may be stripped from those categories in such cases as the violation of the legal commitment or losing at least one of the conditions upon which a person was granted the citizenship.

As per updates, getting the Emirati citizenship will be done only through nominations from Rulers' and Crown Princes' Courts, Executive Councils, and the Cabinet based on federal entities nominations. A recommendation letter from related government institutes is also mandatory.
