Fight Over Altitude of Musk's Starlink and Amazon's Kuiper Satellites Constellation

SpaceX on Sunday launched its Falcon 9 rocket carrying a record number of satellites on board, the private space company said.

"Today's Starlink comment does not serve the public in favor Amazon satellite system It is, in the best case scenario, after several years of start-up".

It's just the latest space spat between the world's two richest individuals, pitting Musk against Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

SpaceX and Amazon are vying for room in Earth's orbit for their massive satellite internet projects, CNBS reported on Tuesday.

Musk's Space Exploration Technologies Corp. has launched more than 1,000 satellites for its Starlink internet service and is signing up early customers in the USA, United Kingdom and Canada. Last year, Amazon won approval from the Federal Communications Commission to put 3,236 satellites in a different set of orbits, with at least half of them to be launched by 2026. An assumption is being made that it will bring in $10 billion to the company. The company argued in its objection that Starlink satellites at that altitude could cause more signal interferences with Project Kuiper satellites and other nearby satellite networks. "These also have laser links between the satellites, so no ground stations are needed over the poles", he said in response to one tweet about the launch. And that's where things get tricky. The FCC approved SpaceX's request in 2018.

That group includes players Derek Jeter , Larry Walker and Ted Simmons , along with legendary labor leader Marvin Miller. The news doesn't mean that the 2021 induction ceremony normally held each summer in Cooperstown will be a quiet one.

SpaceX has been testing out its satellite lasers for a while, and in September previous year, the company explained that "Once these space lasers are fully deployed, Starlink will be one of the fastest options available to transfer data around the world", as Space News reported. SpaceX's proposal has been the subject of back-and-forth arguments ever since.

The Amazon of Jeff Bezos was among businesses who disputed SpaceX's request because the adjustment might conflict with other satellites.

"The facts are simple", a spokesperson told Futurism. It said the change would put SpaceX satellites in the midst of the Kuiper System orbits, according to filings at the agency. Those changes not only create a more risky environment for collisions in space, but they also increase radio interference for customers. "It is clearly in SpaceX's interest to smother competition in the cradle if they can, but it is certainly not in the public's interest", the statement added.

Will the FCC give SpaceX the go-ahead to lower its satellite's orbits? Don't expect an immediate verdict. Amazon has not said when releases would begin, but the company's FCC license issued through July. That suggests that SpaceX satellites deployed at 560 or 570 km could end up in the direction of Project Kuiper satellites licensed at neighboring altitudes.
