The city government of the capital New Delhi said it was working to increase the number of beds in hospital intensive care units as fears abound of a resurgence in COVID-19 cases after the Diwali festival.

The WHO data showed that Austria reported the sharpest increase in new cases on the continent last week, marking a 30 per cent hike from the previous week.

So far, Europe has seen 15,738,179 confirmed infections and 354,154 deaths attributed to the coronavirus, with only the Americas reporting higher region-wide figures, according to World Health Organization data.

Europe, which on Tuesday saw its total number of coronavirus infections climb past 15 million, remained the hardest-hit region.

Mr Kluge said Europe accounted for 28 per cent of global cases and 26 per cent of deaths.

Case numbers across the region grew by over 40 per cent, with more than 1.45 million new cases registered, and deaths were up by 11 percent, with over 19,100 new fatalities during the seven-day period.

Two senior administration officials told CBS News that doctors believe that in just a week, the USA may see 1,500 deaths a day. The order will last one month, until December 21, but could be extended if infection rates and disease trends don't improve.

While it took the region almost nine months to record its first 5 million cases, the next 10 million cases were reported in less than two months, according to a Reuters analysis.

Virologist Steven Van Gucht, from the Belgian government's Sciensano health group, said the daily average of deaths in the country now stood at 185 people, a 5% decrease compared to the average a week ago.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency reported 313 new cases on Wednesday, raising the country's total to 29,311 including 496 deaths. Of every 100 infections last reported worldwide, about 39 were reported from countries in Europe.

Officials in the Netherlands, to the north, were easing coronavirus restrictions amid falling infection rates, and were poised to re-open venues like cinemas, museums, libraries, zoos and swimming pools - still with limitations on how many people can visit - after a two-week closure.

Globally, the countries with the biggest number of COVID-19 cases are the US, India, Italy, France, and Brazil. Check your jurisdiction's restrictions on gathering limits.
