New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern wins 2nd term in a landslide

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern wins 2nd term in a landslide

On the campaign trail, Ardern was greeted like a rock star by people who crammed into malls and spilled onto streets to cheer her on and get selfies with her.

Labour party supporters await Labour Leader Jacinda Ardern to arrive as they watch the results come for New Zealand's general election in Auckland.

She acknowledged voters who had switched allegiances from National. But more recent polls have indicated she may need the continued support of the minor Green Party.

She said New Zealand would build back better from the coronavirus crisis, and that Labour had the mandate to accelerate response and recovery.

Labour was committed to key infrastructure, 100 per cent renewal electricity, the environment and supporting those at risk.

"Tonight has been a very tough night. but three years will be gone in the blink of an eye and I say to everybody: 'We will be back'".

Mr Gayford, who was at home with Ms Ardern and their baby daughter Neve in Auckland, said his fiancée was "straight into work mode" as soon as she realised she had won.

Ardern, 40, has captured the hallowed center ground in New Zealand politics with a blend of empathetic leadership and skilled crisis management that has also won her fame overseas.

The Labour Party has steamrolled its way to an historic victory, sweeping National out to sea on a red tide and condemning the opposition party to the second-worst result in its 84 years of existence.

"Now more than ever is the time to keep going, to keep working. let's keep moving".

The conservative leader, known as "Crusher" for her hardline policies when police minister in a previous government, has vowed to stay on as leader regardless of the result.

Despite what appeared to be a devastating result for New Zealand First, Peters was inscrutable as ever in a short speech which did not concede defeat and arguably suggested he was willing to continue his long crusade from the political wilderness.

The latest single from Justin Bieber - " Lonely " - produced by Benny Blanco , may be one of his most personal songs yet. Tremblay told eTalk of the experience: "I had actually never played a real person before".

"As for the next challenge, we'll all have to wait and see". This has not been an ordinary election and this has not been an ordinary time.

The following year, Ms Ardern became only the second world leader to give birth while in office.

But Seymour told supporters this was just the beginning of the party's rise, with words that may send a chill down the spine of National MPs trying to win back supporters from their right-wing rival.

Gayford spent the evening on the barbecue and surprised media and residents with fish bites made from his catch on a fishing trip with his father and brother in law.

Jacinda Ardern's major victory in the 2020 election is making headlines around the world.

Earlier in the day Ardern delivered homemade cheese scones to Labour volunteers at Polish House in Sandringham.

Labour Minister David Parker said it was a landslide win for his party. While the figures are early, they exceed pre-election opinion polls and, if they remain consistent, would represent Labour's strongest showing in decades.

National Party leader Ms Collins said she phoned the Prime Minister to offer her congratulations on what she said was an outstanding result.

"Just to avoid any doubt, tonight is the start of the next campaign".

National is also in danger of losing more than 15 of its electorate seats - including several traditional strongholds. However Brownlee would make it back in on the list if he chose to stay on, and Paul Goldsmith also seemed safe.

The leader of Australia's Labor Party, Anthony Albanese, was focusing on the positive side of the election night, however.

Other National MPs were less forgiving - Simon Bridges and Mark Mitchell pointed to mistakes in the campaign, but both said Collins did not deserve to cop all the blame.
