IKEA to buy back customers old & unwanted furniture

IKEA was founded by Ingvar Kamprad, who turned a small-scale mail-order business started on his family's farm into a furniture empire by letting customers piece together his simple and low-cost furniture themselves, in 1943.

Later this year IKEA will open its first second-hand store, in a shopping center west of Stockholm.

When buying new furniture, homeowners may be left at a loss of what to do with their old items.

Ikea plans to create dedicated areas in each store where people can sell back their old furniture and find repaired or refurbished furniture.

While this project has aroused interest among IKEA lovers, not all of the company's furniture products are worthy of it. Program-acceptable items include dressers, bookshelves and wardrobe units, small tables, cabinets, dining tables and desks, chairs without mattresses and chests of drawers and drawers.

Under the scheme customers will get vouchers to spend at IKEA stores, the value of which depends on the condition of the furniture they are selling back.

The initiative aims to reduce waste and fight climate change.

Furniture that is being returned "as new", (no scratches) will be worth 50 per cent of the original price; "very good" (with minor scratches) will be worth 40 per cent of the original price and "well used" (several scratches) will be worth 30 per cent of the original price.

Prior to returning furniture, customers must fill out an online offer request.

"Currently, 45 percent of total global carbon emissions come from the way the world produces and uses everyday products, so Buy Back represents an opportunity to address unsustainable consumption and its impact on climate change". The furniture will then be sold in a new "As Is" section which will be replacing Ikea's "Bargain Corner".

Sustainability and healthy living is the defining issue to tackle, Hege Sæbjørnsen, IKEA's United Kingdom and Ireland sustainability manager, said.

The scheme will also be taking place in 26 other countries.

Hege Saebjornsen, country sustainability manager for Ikea UK and Ireland, said "being circular" was a good business opportunity as well as a responsibility, adding that the climate crisis requires everyone to radically rethink their consumption habits.
