China joins WHO-led COVAX for fair access to Covid-19 vaccines

Woods said: "Pfizer have said they are making good progress with the development of a Covid-19 vaccine".

COVAX is a platform created to support the research, development and manufacturing of vaccine candidates and negotiate their pricing, with richer countries taking the lead. The United States, for example, has booked 800 million doses through six developers.

These vaccines will be delivered equally to all participating countries, proportional to their populations, initially prioritising healthcare workers then expanding to cover 20% of the population of participating countries.

Self-financing countries in Covax scheme can request vaccine doses sufficient for 10-50 per cent of their populations, GAVI said on its website.

Meanwhile, the main hurdle for COVAX, according to Ding, was the wait for one of the first vaccines to be declared a success.

But the COVAX facility has been struggling to find enough money to fund those deals.

COVAX plans to buy 2 billion doses of a vaccine by the end of 2021, although it remains unknown whether the successful vaccine will require one or two doses.

It is not clear how much is China willing to bring on the table.

"China just signed an agreement with Gavi, the vaccine alliance, officially joining COVAX", Department of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Hua Chunying tweeted on Friday. The company announced in September that it had bought a new manufacturing site to ramp up production once its vaccine gets approval.

A successful vaccine candidate from China could help it fix its reputation overseas.

China has at least four experimental vaccines in final stages of clinical trials, and is also in talks with the World Health Organization to have its domestically made vaccines assessed for global use.

The decision comes after the USA said last month that it would not join Covax, citing its ties to organizations close to China and the WHO, which the Trump administration has accused of being excessively influenced by Beijing. So far, 171 countries and economies have joined the platform.

"Understanding parents' attitudes to an expedited COVID-19 vaccine is imperative in helping inform public health strategy and ultimately improve vaccine acceptance", said Goldman.

This is supposedly vital for the safety and tolerability of a vaccine for use in humans, and also to maximise the amount of mRNA collected from the initial production process. "The aim of COVAX is to ensure that 2 billion doses are manufactured and distributed equitably by the end of 2021", Ghebreyesus said.

Overall, the study found that more than half (52%) of fathers were likely to suggest modifying the approval standards, while a greater proportion of mothers were in support of continuing the current vaccine development and regulatory process.

Around a dozen vaccine candidates, including at least five partly or wholly developed by Chinese organizations, are now undergoing phase 3 clinical trials, which test their safety and efficacy on thousands of people before they are submitted for approval.
