Maserati aim to fuel sales with new supercar, electrics

The crown jewel for the Modena-based manufacturer is its new supercar, the MC20 - a sleek two-seater featuring doors that swivel upwards, a ultra-modern interior cockpit and a design styled on features that made the Trident-badged Maserati world-famous in the past.

Maserati hinted at an electric drivetrain for future models in January, although at the time they actually referred to it as a "100% electric "engine".

"We're going back to the racetrack, where it all began for us", Maserati boss Davide Grasso said Wednesday evening, as Maserati unveiled the MC20 to a music and special light effects spectacular. As such, they made sure its personality exudes performance, with an emphasis on details - such as the butterfly doors not only serving as a visual hook, but also having their own specific objective in terms of ergonomically allowing for an improved access to the cockpit. They removed the iconic big spoiler though and in its place is a discreet one that still ensures additional downforce at higher speeds. But the MC20 is here now, at last, orders are being taken and it will go into production on the old GranTurismo line later this year.

The film's credits include a thank you to Xinjiang authorities, including an entity that is included on the US sanctions list. The goal of boycotting the film was already in place after supporting the crackdown on protesters in Hong Kong.

"MC" stands for Maserati Corse, and "20" for 2020.

We also say the new model looks great in its exclusive new launch color, part of the new roster that was specifically developed for the model: Bianco Audace, Giallo Genio, Rosso Vincente, Blu Infinito, Nero Enigma and Grigio Mistero. Meanwhile, the company calls it "Nettuno" engine.

In a auto that Maserati says weighs 1,500kg, it's enough for proper supercar performance. All new Maseratis will offer electric power, starting with the new GranTurismo. The automatic gearbox is adjusted via buttons on the transmission tunnel, and there's a rotary dial to select different driving modes. Assembly will kick off before the end of the year and order books have been opened immediately after the world premiere.
