Hamilton ready for one of his toughest drives at 'phenomenal' Mugello

Meanwhile, Red Bull driver Alex Albon secured his first podium in F1, but all the talk from Tuscany's Mugello Circuit was about the chaotic crashes which plagued the race.

The mayhem started on the opening lap, when a collision at the first corner resulted in last weekend's victor Pierre Gasly and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen flying off the track. The first impact led to Gasly then colliding with Grosjean and following Verstappen into the gravel and out of the race. In the middle of the pack, rookie Nicholas Latifi jumped on the gas but then had to brake dramatically.

"That was f****** stupid from whoever was at the front", Haas driver Romain Grosjean cried. But there was little to celebrate as Charles Leclerc finished eighth and Sebastian Vettel 10th.

It refers to one of a number of controversial cases in the United States in which police officers have shot and killed black civilians.

At the front, Hamilton was in control and looked on course for an easy win after building up a seven-second lead over Bottas - but on lap 43 the race was stopped for a second time.

"Valtteri was miles ahead really in some of those areas so the pressure was higher than ever because if I hadn't done the work then I wouldn't have got the result".

Canelo Alvarez Sued Golden Boy Promotions/DAZN Tuesday
Alvarez is insisting that when he signed the deal in 2018, there was no mention of him taking on a premium or ordinary foe. So, now, this is his next blockbuster legal move to try to end his deal with Golden Boy and DAZN.

But there was to be another twist after Racing Point's Lance Stroll crashed into the barriers, leading to a second red flag and another lengthy delay and restart. Stroll, running fourth, sustained serious damage to his vehicle in the accident - which was caused by a left-front puncture - but the Canadian emerged unscathed from his cockpit.

Hamilton took a knee ahead of the race at the anti-racism demonstration which has been held ahead of every F1 race this season. The Finn made it back past Ricciardo on the next lap but his best chance of beating Hamilton to the flag was over.

Bottas, in a bid to make a race of it, at one stage called for a different strategy to Hamilton, only for both to emerge on the hard compound following stops around 20 laps from the end. "It was like three races in one day".

"I am fine. Only a blow to the wrist and hand, but honestly it does not hurt me at all". At least the first part, the first start was absolutely flawless, on the re-start I managed to keep my position and felt that the pace was good. The second start was better.

"After that, Valtteri was still right there the whole time, so if I made any mistake, he would have slipstreamed me up this 1,000 metre straight". "It has to turn out well for me at some point". It is an incredible circuit. "It will come and I'll keep pushing".

The race took two hours and 25 minutes to complete, with the spells behind the Safety Car adding up to 76 minutes.
