Financial Times: Trial of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine may resume next week

The Financial Times reports that the large-scale clinical trial evaluating AstraZeneca (AZN -0.9%) and the University of Oxford's COVID-19 vaccine candidate, AZD1222, could restart early next week.

A review board is now set to investigate what the issue is before the vaccine trials can commence once again.

All global trial sites have now been put on pause while an independent investigation reviews the safety data before regulators decide whether the trial can restart, the BBC's Medical Editor Fergus Walsh reports.

AstraZeneca (AZN.L) has paused human trials of a COVID-19 vaccine it has developed in partnership with the University of Oxford. The vaccine's trial was put on hold following the patient's reaction.

South Africa has also been in talks with Johnson & Johnson and Novavax to conduct other experimental vaccine trials.

The spokesperson for AstraZeneca said: "We are working to expedite the review of the single event to minimise any potential impact on the trial timeline".

So Romney told the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee that it would make sense for the government and its scientists to make a comprehensive effort to dispel myths and bogus information on all vaccines, not just those for COVID-19. Other trials of the same vaccine are also progressing in other countries, including Brazil and South Africa, with additional trials planned for Japan and Russian Federation.

Collins expressed "cautious optimism" that one of the vaccines being tested will pan out by the end of the year but warned: "Certainly to try to predict whether it happens on a particular week before or after a particular date in early November is well beyond anything that any scientist right now could tell you".

Dune First Trailer Will Premiere on Twitter
Warner Bros . dropped the first action packed full trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune , on Wednesday. It was first adapted for the screen by David Lynch in 1984 in a film starring Kyle MacLachlan and Patrick Stewart.

Stat News was the first news organization to report AstraZeneca's decision to suspend the trials. "A vaccine that nobody wants to take is not very useful", said Soriot.

"In large clinical trials, illnesses will happen by chance and must be independently reviewed". The U.S. trial is now taking place at 62 sites across the country, according to clinicaltrials.gov, a government registry, though some have not yet started enrolling participants.

"I would call it a good development in my opinion, in the sense that it seems that all the safety rules of the clinical study work". The vaccine uses a non-replicating chimpanzee adenovirus to deliver a spike protein from the virus that causes COVID-19, officially known as SARS-CoV-2, to induce an immune response.

Appearing before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labour & Pensions, Collins said the severe adverse event in the United Kingdom patient was transverse myelitis, a neurological disorder that causes inflammation of the spinal cord. "We need to work on educating them and engaging them and being compassionate with them and patient with them to answer their questions". Such events are routine in major trials, and happen any time a volunteer is admitted to hospital when the cause of their illness is not immediately apparent.

Dr Coatsworth said the pausing of the event was "quite normal" when it comes to vaccine development.

A few potential vaccines are now undergoing clinical evaluation. "The AstraZeneca Phase III trial will bring answers as to the effectiveness of this vaccine".

Such holds are not uncommon, and it's not clear yet how long AstraZeneca's will last.
