European Union calling for urgent talks over ‘illegal’ Brexit change

"She indicated that she is consistent with my view that any threat that would reimpose a border on the island of Ireland would negate any possibility of having a free trade bilateral agreement with the United Kingdom", he added.

"The withdrawal agreement is not open for renegotiation and that we expect that the letter and the spirit of the withdrawal agreement will be fully respected", European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic said.

Nancy Pelosi said in a statement: "Whatever form it takes, Brexit can not be allowed to imperil the Good Friday Agreement, including the stability brought by the invisible and frictionless border between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland".

And Downing Street claimed yesterday that the Withdrawal Agreement was "not like any other treaty" because it was sealed "at pace in the most challenging possible political circumstances".

The Bill, which Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis admitted broke worldwide law "in a very specific and limited way", may contradict the Withdrawal Agreement agreed previous year.

While Johnson has said he wants a deal by Oct. 15, or London would go for a no-deal Brexit, the European Union says the negotiators must have had a legal text agreed by the end of October to leave the bloc's 27 members time to ratify by the end of the year. London says that if it can not negotiate a favorable trade deal to take effect from January 1, it will simply walk away.

Earlier, Democratic Congressman Richard Neal told Irish national broadcaster RTÉ that he had raised concerns over the latest Brexit developments, and their implications for Northern Ireland, with Ms Pelosi.

The arbitral tribunal was asked to make a judgement on the Philippines' case against China in the South China Sea. However, member countries were divided over how to deal with the growing presence of China in the sea.

But under the new legislation, Britain intends unilaterally to give itself new powers to regulate post-Brexit trade involving Northern Ireland, in violation of the Withdrawal Agreement, arguing they are necessary to preserve the peace.

ITV News Political Correspondent Carl Dinnen said: "It says in black and white that the provisions of the bill will take effect even if they are inconsistent or incompatible with global or other domestic law".

Former prime minister Sir John Major said: "For generations, Britain's word - solemnly given - has been accepted by friend and foe". But Lewis said it was created to " clarify" what would apply if an agreement can't be reached in talks with the EU. If we lose our reputation for honouring the promises we make, we will have lost something beyond price that may never be regained'. The Scottish government has also signalled that it could take legal action which could also delay the bill's entry into force.

At Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Johnson said his priority was to preserve the Good Friday Agreement and the Northern Ireland peace process.

The US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has warned that there will be "absolutely no chance" of a US-UK trade agreement if Brexit undermines the Good Friday Agreement.

"The primary global obligation around this issue is to protect the peace process in Northern Ireland and I very much hope we conclude a deal before the end of the transition period", he told Times Radio.

"If the UK violates that worldwide treaty and Brexit undermines the Good Friday accord, there will be absolutely no chance of a US-UK trade agreement passing the Congress".
