Carrie Lam says will cancel her USA visa over sanction

The Department of Treasury has imposed sanctions on Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, and 10 other individuals for "for undermining Hong Kong's autonomy and restricting the freedom of expression or assembly of the citizens of Hong Kong".

"Intimidation and threats can not frighten the Chinese people", they added.

Hong Kong Commerce Secretary Edward Yau called the sanctions "unreasonable and barbarous" and said they would harm USA interests in the city, an Asian financial and shipping hub.

"The United States stands with the people of Hong Kong", US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Friday.

Since Hong Kong's transfer from British control in 1997, Hong Kong has maintained semiautonomous rule from China in a model known as "one country, two systems".

China's top legislative body is expected to discuss whether to extend the terms of Hong Kong lawmakers following postponement of the territory's Legislative Council elections. She noted that she was the deputy when she applied for her USA visa in 2016.

The penalties also freeze any US assets the Hong Kong officials hold and generally prohibits Americans from conducting business with them.

Secretary-general of Hong Kong's national security law committee Eric Chan Kwok-ki said these so-called sanctions will only make Hong Kong people, particularly those who still have false hopes, clearly understand how unreasonable and peremptory the U.S. government can be.

Hong Kong's acting privacy commissioner said he would write to the United States authorities to express disappointment over the release of the data.

Beijing's security law was imposed in late June, following last year's huge pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, sending a political chill through the semi-autonomous city.

In a short statement, Luo said he welcomed the blacklisting. "We will not be intimidated", the spokesman said. In response to the new national security law, Canada, Britain, New Zealand, Germany and Australia have all suspended their extradition treaties with Hong Kong.

Hong Kong's government on Saturday called it "blatant and barbaric interference in the internal affairs of the People's Republic of China, using Hong Kong as a pawn", the BBC reported.

The US measures come three months ahead of the November election in which Trump, who is behind his rival Joe Biden, is campaigning hard on an increasingly strident anti-Beijing message.

Other than Lam, six other Hong Kong officials were sanctioned, including the current and preceding Hong Kong police chiefs, and the city's security and justice secretaries.

Late Thursday, Trump signed a pair of executive orders barring USA residents and companies from doing business with the Chinese-owned TikTok and WeChat apps beginning 45 days from now, citing the national security risk of leaving Americans' personal data exposed.

"We assess that China prefers that President Trump - whom Beijing sees as unpredictable - does not win reelection", he said in a statement Friday.
