They are also found in Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and southwestern China.

A tiger is pictured from a camera trap from the western forest of Thailand, in this undated handout photo obtained by Reuters in July 28, 2020.

Remote camera traps captured three young Indochinese tigers in February and March.

Panthera said that's because the tigers have been poached for the illegal wildlife trade, which still stands as the gravest threat to their survival.

He also said that despite having just 2.5 per cent of the world's total land mass, India has 8 per cent of the globe's bio-diversity and it is because of the culture that teaches co existence and respect for trees and animals, that despite having such limited resources people preserve the faura and fauna with heart.

Two years from the 2022 target set by world leaders to double global tiger numbers under the Global Tiger Recovery Programme, tigers are faring better in some nations, including India and Nepal, but are collapsing in many other destinations.

There are an estimated 3,900 tigers left in the wild worldwide, down from 100,000 a century ago, with the majority in India.

Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has death sentence overturned on appeal
Dzhokhar was found guilty on 30 charges including using a weapon of mass destruction and for fatally shooting a policeman. He was convicted and sentenced to death in 2015 and has served time in a federal supermax prison in Colorado since.

But while tiger populations remain stable in the country, the report warns that with the populations being confined to small Protected Areas, some of which have habitat corridors that permit tiger movement between them, "most of the corridor habitats in India are not protected areas, and are degrading due to unsustainable human use and developmental projects". The tiger status in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha has steadily declined, which the report stated "is a matter of concern".

Panthera has been working to aid tiger population growth in Thailand for the past 10 years. Seventy per cent of the world's tigers are in India and the conservation effort has been a huge success...

"These sightings are extremely encouraging for the future of tigers in our country and beyond", said Chief of the Wildlife Research Division for DNP, Dr. Saksit Simcharoen.

"We are excited about this discovery", Kritsana Kaewplang, country director for conservation group Panthera in Thailand, said of the footage which was released on Global Tiger Day.

The key to helping wild tiger populations recover is to focus on conserving landscapes where they can thrive and ensuring communities in these wildlife-rich areas are supported and included in conservation, the organisation said.

The largest breeding ground is in the Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries in western Thailand.

"To witness apex predators, like tigers, returning to forests means the ecosystem is recovering, which is good for all wildlife", said Eileen Larney, ZSL's Chief Technical Advisor in Thailand.
