One Marine dead and 8 missing after amphibious assault vehicle accident

Eight military personnel remained missing at sea Friday almost a full day after a US Marine amphibious assault vehicle sank in deep water off the California coast during training exercises.

Search and rescue efforts are underway to find the missing Marines, with the Navy and Coast Guard assisting, according to the statement.

Colonel Christopher Bronzi said on Twitter: "We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident".

The fate of seven other Marines and one sailor was unknown almost 24 hours after the accident as rescue operations involving multiple aircraft and boats continued, said Lieutenant General Joseph Osterman.

CNN reports that all of the service members involved in the incident are assigned to the 15th MEU based out of Camp Pendleton in California.

The deadly incident occurred during a routine training exercise near the island of San Clemente, the US Marine Corps told Business Insider in an emailed statement earlier in the day.

A search is under way for the missing service members, with Navy and Coast Guard help. Both were taken to local hospitals, with one reported to be in critical condition and the other in stable condition.

Part of this is perhaps there are also questions in the air about the available budget that Mikel Arteta has at his disposal. Given the current financial situation of Premier League clubs, Man Utd.is forced to choose between the two.

A Marine rescued later died at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, according to officials. Upon leaving a ship, the vehicle, which resembles a tank, will drop below the surface of the water before popping back up.

The guided-missile destroyer USS John Finn and Coast Guard cutter Forrest Rednour are searching for the missing crew along with small boats from the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island and amphibious transport docks USS Somerset and USS San Diego.

The name of the Marine who died was not disclosed.

Thursday's accident marks the third time in less than a decade that Camp Pendleton Marines have been injured or died in amphibious assault vehicles during training exercises.

The most common AAV used by the Marine Corps is the AAV-P7/A1.

San Clemente Island is about 70 miles west of San Diego and hosts communications equipment overseen by the Navy for managing air space, ranges and operating areas, according to the official website for Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility, San Diego.
