Virgin Galactic shows off its new spaceship, VSS Unity

Virgin Galactic showed off the interiors of its passenger spaceflight vehicle the VSS Unity on Tuesday.

Members of the public can also experience the cabin through an "augmented reality" mobile app which allows viewers to "explore the Virgin Galactic cabin design and spaceflight experience", according to a news release. Rows of circular windows line the cabin to provide views of Earth and the solar system.

"Providing safety without distraction, quietly absorbing periods of sensory intensity, and offering each astronaut a level of intimacy required for personal discovery and transformation", Virginia Galactic said of its spacecraft.

Six hundred of Virgin Galactic's "Future Astronauts" have already paid between $200,000 and $250,000 per seat, although the first flight date is yet to be confirmed.

It also made use of engineered foam and fabrics within the seats, designed and developed by Under Armour using the same 3D knit found in the flight suits.

The color palette of the cabin has been carefully curated so that it complements the architecture of the seat, the cabin itself and spacesuits. "A pilot-controlled recline mechanism, optimally positions astronauts to manage G-forces on boost and re-entry and frees up cabin space to maximize an unrestricted astronaut float zone when in zero gravity".

GDP shrank by record 32.9% in second quarter during coronavirus shutdowns
Spending by state and local governments, whose budgets have been decimated in the fight against coronavirus fell at a 5.6% rate. Wall Street futures are pointing to a lower open, as markets are waiting for US GDP data for the second quarter.

Mood lighting includes multi-color LEDs concealed within the window and surrounds and subtly reflects back the human responses to the contrasting stages of flight.

As the Earth comes into view against the black sky of space, all lighting in the cabin will be turned off to allow people to focus on their home planet below. Development on SpaceShipTwo began more than 15 years ago, and it could soon be ready to provide passengers that have big enough wallets with the trip of a lifetime. Soft cabin surfaces and elements become intuitive hand and footholds, allowing astronauts to explore the cabin freely and fully.

More akin to a slick little private jet than a spacecraft, VSS Unity's cabin feels roomy yet womb-like, aided by the most fantastic mood lighting that harmonises with each phase of your mission - practicality during boarding, calmness on cruising to launch altitude and vibrancy during the rocket ride.

The desire to capture and share the experience was top of mind for the design team, which incorporated 16 cameras into the cabin (in addition to those in the cockpit and mounted externally). It's a huge day for the people who have worked so hard to design and build and fly the interior.

"That's what our customers want", Virgin Galactic chief space officer George Whitesides told CNN Business' Rachel Crane.

"Today, we're sharing the culmination of incredible creativity, unswerving dedication, and total commitment of realizing our dream of opening space to change the world for good", Michael Colglazier, the new CEO of Virgin Galactic, said in the video.
