Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's insane demand ends hostage

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's promotion of a 2005 animal rights documentary led to the end of a unsafe hostage situation on a bus in Northwest Ukraine Tuesday.

The accused, who has been named by police as Maksym Kryvosh, 44, had taken 10-13 people hostage on a bus.

Zelensky said he worked out an agreement in which Kryvosh would release three hostages if the president recorded a video asking people to watch the movie Earthlings, a 2005 film criticizing the industrial use of animals narrated by actor Joaquin Phoenix, a longtime animal rights activist.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky yesterday defended his decision to agree to a hostage-taker's weird demand that he post a movie recommendation to end a 12-hour stand-off.

The SBU security service said all 13 hostages were released unharmed after a police stand-off with the man, who had threatened to detonate an explosive device.

Zelensky said that the gunman was talking to a wide range of experts and although a special assault operation was being planned, it was ruled out as it was too risky to the hostages.

After Zelensky posted the message about "Earthlings" - which Krivosh reportedly screened to hostages on the bus - all hostages were released and Krivosh surrendered to police. One hostage, who spoke with a journalist by telephone during the crisis, begged them to put the gunman in touch with the president's office.

Kryvosh used Twitter to issue a list of "rambling demands" under the name "Maksim the Bad", including charges that the Ukrainian government itself is a "terrorist organization". The National Police of Ukraine later said its specialists had managed to defuse the grenade and it didn't explode. Zelenskiy later deleted the video he had posted on his Facebook page.

On Wednesday, Kryvosh was charged with terrorism, hostage-taking and illegal possession of weapons, according to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.
