China's Huawei leads with global shipments, report says

But that hasn't stopped Huawei from shipping 55.8 million phones in the second quarter of 2020.

If you'd told me Huawei would rise to be the world's biggest smartphone vendor this time a year ago, I would have laughed you out of the room, and yet here we are.

Canalys said the embattled firm, which is facing U.S. sanctions and falling overseas sales, shipped 55.8 million devices - overtaking Samsung for the first time, which shifted 53.7 million units.

Nevertheless, Huawei's position as number one seller may prove short-lived once other markets recover given it is mainly due to economic disruption, a senior Huawei employee with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. For instance, smartphone shipments were down 48% in India during Q2 - an important market for Samsung.

The worldwide research team has suggested that it might be useful to conduct surveillance for more viruses closely related to SARS-CoV-2 along the region from Yunnan to Hubei.

It's obviously a unique set of circumstances and it will be hard for Huawei to maintain its lead in the long term as worldwide markets start to bounce back.

South Korean tech giant Samsung released its latest earnings report, showing an increase in profits for the second quarter of 2020, despite disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. "Its major channel partners in key regions, such as Europe, are increasingly wary of ranging Huawei devices, taking on fewer models, and bringing in new brands to reduce risk". "Strength in China alone will not be enough to sustain Huawei at the top once the global economy starts to recover", he added. As per Stanton, Samsung has a very small presence in China, with less than 1% market share.

Samsung said that as Covid-19 spread and caused closures and slowdowns at stores and production sites, the firm responded to these challenges through its "extensive global supply chain" to minimise the impact of the pandemic. The report did not mention Apple, but China is the iPhone maker's third-largest market according to its most recent earnings report, coming after the United States and Europe.

There could be all this doubt revolving around Huawei's current lead but it is clear that this will help in building back its confidence in the global market.
