Here Are the Key Points of GOP's Virus Relief Package

Senate Republicans on Tuesday continued to distance themselves from a proposal to fund the construction of a new Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters in their $1 trillion coronavirus relief package, an unrelated provision pushed by President Donald Trump and criticized by Democrats, who claim the effort is aimed at protecting the president's financial interests.

The Republicans come to the negotiating table hobbled by infighting and delays.

"We're not going to let them starve while that happens", Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said in a Senate speech criticising Republicans.

"It's a shame to reward badly run radical left Democrats with all of this money they're looking for", Trump said at the White House, complaining about the "big bailout money" for cities.

But McConnell acknowledged the limits with Republicans split: "We've done the best we can". Schumer and Pelosi have echoed the concerns of those who say that the White House's insistence on plan to keep it there is a move that puts money in Trump's pockets, since any consideration of its relocation would leave open a prime piece of real estate that could be occupied by a new hotel - creating competition to the nearby Trump International Hotel.

The $600-per-week federal unemployment payments allocated under the CARES Act (which are added onto states' respective unemployment payouts) will expire at this month's end.

"The American people don't call that a controversy, they call that common sense", McConnell said.

"A lot of it has been eroded right now, a lot of people off of work, a lot of suppliers involved in there", he said. Democrats have shown flickers of willingness to curb the federal aid but held firm in first-round talks.

For school reopenings, Democrats want four times the $105bn Republicans have proposed.

Coronavirus cases in India stands at 14,83,157; death toll at 33,425
In other words, 1,918 persons in every 10 lakh or one person in about every 521 persons have tested positive for the virus so far. But many experts say India is not testing enough people, and that many coronavirus-linked deaths are not being recorded as such.

To recap, if the HEALS Act becomes law, individuals earning less than $75,000 per year and couples earning less than $150,000 per year will receive a $1,200 check or a $2,400 check, respectively.

Democrats and Republicans in the US Congress late Tuesday were far from reaching an agreement on a new package to support the world's leading economy, brought to its knees by the virus pandemic.

McConnell insisted no bill will pass without a sweeping liability shield for doctors, businesses and schools reopening.

Unemployment assistance, eviction protections, and other relief for millions of Americans are at stake as White House officials launch negotiations with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on a new coronavirus aid package that's teetering in Congress ahead of looming deadlines.

The bill fails to mandate an emergency workplace health and safety standard to protect workers from the virus.

The Republican proposal would also give many Americans direct payments of $1,200 each, provide billions in loans to small businesses and support hospitals.

They note HEALS does not include hazard pay for essential workers, nor does the GOP bill adequately provide additional funding for food stamps. Josh Hawley, R-Mo. "I don't know what we're trying to accomplish".

In particular, senators blasted the administration for including $1.75 billion in the bill to build a new Federal Bureau of Investigation building.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham estimated that half the party's 53 members in the Senate could oppose the plan.
