Google to keep staff working from home until at least July 2021

The company had previously said workers could stay home until the end of this year. Google had originally said employees should expect to return to the office in January 2021.

When the coronavirus first hit the USA this year, tech companies were among the first employers to move to remote work and to cancel big events.

"To give employees the ability to plan ahead, we are extending our global voluntary work from home option through June 30, 2021, for roles that don't need to be in the office", Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote in an email to employees.

Most tech companies have announced that the bulk of employees can work from home until the end of 2020, or haven't finalized a timeline.

Google employees will remain working from home until at least next July, it has been reported.

Protests resurge across USA as clashes continue in Portland
Police said they had arrested 11 people and that one officer had been hospitalized with a leg injury from an explosive. Chuck Lovell, the Portland police chief, released a video message on social media Saturday night calling for peace.

Pichai's decision makes Google the first major U.S. company to formalise a long timetable for remote working to help stem the spread of coronavirus.

The decision affects more than 123,000 employees on the payroll of Google and other Alphabet companies, as well as 80,000 contractors that normally work on the companies' campuses.

Meanwhile, Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg this spring said numerous social giant's employees will be allowed to work from home permanently even after the coronavirus crisis ends.

At Google, Pichai wrote that "We are still learning a lot from our experiences of working from home and will use that knowledge to inform our approach to the future of work at Google".
