U.S. couple draw guns at hundreds of protestors in St Louis

On Sunday, about 300 marchers were walking through an expensive neighbourhood when Mark and Patricia McCloskey emerged from their mansion armed with an AR-15 and a handgun.

President Donald Trump retweeted a video on Monday morning showing an unidentified white couple brandishing their firearms at anti-police brutality protesters in St. Louis, Missouri, who were peacefully marching toward city Mayor Lyda Krewson's home.

"A mob of at least 100 smashed through the historic wrought iron gates of Portland Place (and) rushed towards my home where my family was having dinner outside and put us in fear for our lives", he told KMOV4, the local CBS affiliate.

The protesters, approximately 500 people, were reportedly going to Mayor Lyda Krewson's house to call for her resignation.

The couple, indentified as Mark and Patricia McCloskey, are personal-injury lawyers.

Videos show some protesters attempting to engage in conversation with the couple, telling them to calm down, but others urged them to keep moving instead.

The street is private property and clearly labeled as such with signs saying, "No Trespassing" and "Private Street", CNN reported. She added that her office is "currently working with the public and police to investigate these events".

A second video shows the woman pointing her pistol at protesters from the lawn of the home.

The couple's "Midwestern palazzo" home was featured in St. Louis Magazine in August 2018 after they completed a major renovation.

"As a leader, you don't do stuff like that ... it's only right that we visit her at her home", said state representative Rasheen Aldridge, speaking into a megaphone at the protest on Sunday.

Faced with growing backlash, United States congressman and Trump ally Matt Gaetz came to the McCloskeys' defence on Twitter, depicting a dystopian future if Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden wins the November election.

Mayor Lyda Krewson lives in the same neighborhood. The protesters demanded Krewson's resignation after she read the names and addresses of several residents who supported defunding the police department during an online briefing.

The attorney for St Louis, Kimberly Gardner, said she was "alarmed" to see "peaceful protesters were met by guns and a violent assault".
