US Fighter Jets Intercept Russian Warplanes Near Alaska

United States warplanes intercepted four Russian reconnaissance aircraft near Alaska yesterday, U.S. commanders said.

US fighter jets on Saturday again intercepted Russian planes that entered the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone and stayed there for eight hours, Pentagon officials said, with the Russian reconnaissance aircraft coming within 65 miles of Alaska.

The encounter - acknowledged in a statement from NORAD - follows similar incidents this month in which U.S. F-22 jets intercepted Russian nuclear-capable bombers near Alaska on three separate occasions, CNN reported. The group immediately changed the direction of its flight away from the Russian border when it realized their presence had been detected, the ministry said.

But they stayed in worldwide airspace and did not enter U.S. or Canadian airspace, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said on Twitter. O'Shaughnessy, commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), said in a statement. The ministry also released a video of the Su-30 chasing the USA aircraft out of the neutral waters.

It's not unusual for Russian aircraft to fly close to American territory, but it is rare for intercepts to occur so frequently in one month.

The Russian military has published video footage showing the moment a Su-30 fighter jet intercepted a group of USA spy planes over the Black Sea on Friday.

Other recent intercepts occurred over the Sea of Okhotsk - off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula and north of Hokkaido island in Japan - on June 19, and over the Baltic Sea days earlier, when Russian fighter jets intercepted a B-52. Last Thursday, NORAD intercepted Russian maritime patrol aircraft in the same area.
