Margot Robbie to star in female-centric Pirates of the Caribbean

This project is also separate from the previously announced reboot of the franchise, from Ted Elliott and Craig Mazin. Margot Robbie is in talks to star. She would follow it up with Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), the Robbie-led Suicide Squad spinoff that hit theaters earlier this year which, though receiving generally positive reviews from critics and audiences, did fall short of its break-even point at the box office, and is now attached as the writer for DCEU's The Flash and Batgirl.

Margot Robbie will star in a new Pirates of the Caribbean with Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson joining her to pen the script. The film, though, is not expected to be a spinoff of the original franchise, but rather, an original story with new characters, according to a report by the Hollywood Reporter. Robbie's other notable credits include The Wolf of Wall Street, The Legend of Tarzan, I, Tonya, Mary Queen of Scots and Bombshell.

Based on a ride at the Disney's theme parks, the five Pirates of the Caribbean movies, starring Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, have taken some 4.5 billion dollars at the global box office since 2003.

But past all-female flops doesn't appear to be stopping Hodson and Robbie from dreaming big, as the two have also started a new initiative called "the Lucky Exports Pitch Program", which seeks to get more women - as well as "female-identifying" - writers hired by studios to write action movies.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is now available on Digital HD, Blu-ray, and DVD.
