Gunmen attack Karachi stock exchange, four killed

"Four attackers have been killed, they had come in a silver Corolla auto", Karachi police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon told Reuters.

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Pakistan has always been plagued by Islamist militant violence but attacks have become less frequent in recent years.

The administration told workers inside the building to stay on the higher floors and that "the rangers will comb the compound and then let everyone leave in an orderly fashion".

The four were killed when security forces posted there responded. "They made their way from our parking area and opened fire on everyone", said Abid Ali Habib, Director Pakistan Stock Exchange.

The separatist movement, which is designated a terrorist group by the USA and United Kingdom, says it is fighting for independence for Balochistan.

The stock exchange said in a statement the situation was still unfolding and management, with the help of security forces, was controlling the situation, Bloomberg reported.

Deadly shooting at Black Lives Matter protest in Louisville, Kentucky
Another shooting victim across the street at the Hall of Justice was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. One person was killed and another injured after shots were fired where protesters gathered at the park on June 26, 2020.

People inside the building were being evacuated from the back door of the building, Geo TV reported. The gunmen reportedly attacked the building with grenades.

Pakistan's security situation has improved greatly over recent years after 15-years of widespread bloodshed and insurgency from 2001 onwards.

The operations were coupled with a series of large-scale military offensives targeting homegrown insurgents as well as Taleban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants - often based near the lawless border with Afghanistan. Three people including one policeman have also embraced martyrdom in the incident.

Gunfire was heard following the attack as the police moved in to cordon off the area.

Receiving information about the mishap, contingents of Rangers and police arrived at the scene and killed all four terrorists in retaliation.
