Pressure mounts on DeSantis as coronavirus cases spike in Florida

A record week of surging coronavirus numbers was only heightened on Friday, as state health officials confirmed 8,942 cases, almost doubling the previous record of cases reported in a single day, two days earlier.

Florida, Arizona and Nevada recorded daily highs for cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, highlighting the worsening spread of the virus in several southern and western states, prompting some of them to rollback their reopening plans.

With Friday's tally, Florida now has reported almost 123,000 coronavirus case, with more than 32,000 of them confirmed in just the last seven days.

Texas reported 5,747 new cases as of Saturday afternoon, nearing Thursday's record 5,996 new cases.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez expressed his concerns about the current surge, as well as the growing number of young people who are testing positive for the virus.

At a press conference on Friday, DeSantis said the order was issued because many people were disobeying the state's reopening guidelines. That's almost a quarter of all the confirmed cases in the state so far.

The total number of cases in Palm Beach County has now reached 12,928, and two new cases were reported in Monroe County for a total of 204. "People aren't wearing masks".

On Friday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered bars to shut back down, and scaled back restaurant capacity to 50 percent.

On Friday, Florida bar owners were notified via a tweet by the Department of Business & Professional Regulation that they were to stop selling alcohol at their establishments. Both Abbott and DeSantis are Republican, the same party as President Donald Trump.

The new cases bring the total number of cases in Florida to 132,545 with 3,390 deaths.

"We were just getting to where we could pay the bills", said Tish Keller, owner of the Triple J Chophouse and Brew Co.in downtown Lubbock.

At a briefing on Friday, DeSantis blamed the spike in infections on young people interacting more in the last few weeks, adding that they faced a lower risk of dying than older people.

Florida has confirmed at least 13,987 coronavirus-related hospitalizations since the start of the outbreak.

One of the attendees at the ceremony had recently traveled to Florida and subsequently tested positive, Cuomo said in the release.
