U.S. election: Joe Biden to accept presidential nomination at scaled-back convention

Taking a much different approach than the GOP in light of Covid-19 concerns, the Democratic National Committee announced its plans for "a convention across America" anchored in Milwaukee from August 17-20, 2020.

Democrats plan to hold an nearly entirely virtual presidential nominating convention August 17-20 in Milwaukee using live broadcasts and online streaming. Party officials said standing committee meetings would be held virtually, and organizers said parties for media and volunteers would not take place in Milwaukee.

Party officials confirmed Wednesday that Joe Biden will accept the presidential nomination in person, but it remains to be seen whether there will be a significant in-person audience there to see it.

Former Vice President Joe Biden plans to travel to Milwaukee and accept the nomination in person.

"Leadership means being able to adapt to any situation", Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said on Wednesday.

Last month, Biden won Hawaii's Democratic presidential primary.

Rep. Bennie Thompson of MS will serve as convention chair, party officials said.

The Tanaiste (deputy head of Government) will also rotate between parties, and the leadernof Fine Gael will initally hold that position.

Under its new structure, each night of the convention will be broadcast live from Milwaukee as well as from other satellite cities, locations and landmarks across the country, according to a news release. A process is being developed to ensure all delegates can cast their votes on all convention matters in a remote manner.

Biden has largely remained off the campaign trail and in his DE home since mid-March due to the pandemic, although he has begun participating in small-scale events.

The DNCC said epidemiologist and infectious disease experts W. Ian Lipking and Larry Brilliant will help advise the committee on efforts to protect the health and safety of convention staff, attendees and Wisconsin residents.

In Wisconsin, there are now over 25,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, and the death toll stands at 745. "Donald Trump's days in the Oval Office are numbered". The overall production of the convention's programme, including the satellite broadcasts, will be led by nine-time Emmy-award winning producer Ricky Kirshner.

Following a squabble between President Trump and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, the party made the decision to move Trump's acceptance speech to Jacksonville, Fla., though some of the convention's smaller events will remain in Charlotte.

Perez's comments came just before the Wisconsin Democratic Party held its state convention, a scaled-down, one-day affair that was entirely virtual.
