Abbott Shuts Down Sitting Inside Texas Bars as of Noon Today

In the last three days alone, Texas has reported more than 17,000 confirmed new cases, and for two weeks has set records for hospitalizations on a near-daily basis.

Because of a spike in COVID-19 cases in Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott rolled back some of the planned reopening of businesses with an executive order issued Friday morning.

"People shall not visit bars or similar establishments that hold a permit from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) and are not restaurants as defined above in paragraph number 6; provided, however, that the use by such bars or similar establishments of drive-thru, pickup, or delivery options for food and drinks is allowed to the extent authorized by TABC", the order stated.

Texas was among the most aggressive states in reopening in early June after months of lockdown. On Thursday, the state health department reported 5,996 new cases, the third day in a row of record-high new infections in the state. However, we can only slow the spread if everyone in Texas does their part.

Included in the press release about his action was a reminder from Abbott that he has always said that if the rate of positive cases increased above 10 percent, there would be further preventative action.

"The targeted, measured directives in the executive order are based on links between certain types of businesses and services and the recent rise in positive cases throughout the state".

As Abbott outlined a series of measures aimed at stemming the spread of COVID-19 in Texas, the chief executive of Harris County, the state's largest, issued a stay-at-home advisory and raised the threat level to Level 1, or "severe".

"As I said from the start, if the positivity rate rose above 10 percent, the State of Texas would take further action to mitigate the spread of COVID-19", Abbott said in a statement. "That's the last thing we want to see", Tauzin said.

Outside gatherings of 100 or a lot more persons ought to be accepted by community governments, with specific exceptions.

"Stay home except for essential needs", Hidalgo said.

The governor also banned elective surgeries in four counties that are experiencing rising numbers of coronavirus cases, in order to keep hospital beds open for coronavirus patients. "What does not work is the status quo", Hidalgo said, calling anything in between "a gamble and an experiment on our own people" that is "setting us up for failure".

"There are some regions in the state of Texas that are running tight on hospital capacity that may necessitate a localized strategy to make sure that hospital beds will be available", Abbott said on Wednesday.

On Monday, a state inspector suspended the license of a central Florida bar where patrons had not socially distanced and more than two dozen contracted the virus, as well as 13 workers. "If you go in and it's just like mayhem, like Dance Party USA, and it's packed to the rafters, that's just cut and dry, and that's not just an innocent mistake".
